Jim Burns joined Ivor Arbiter in 1969 and formed Hayman. This 4040 was the only Hayman bass and dates from around '72/73 with design input from Bob Pearson, woodwork by Jack Golder and features "superflux" double-pole staggered pick-ups.
This example is in good condition for its age. Rusty screws have been replaced, and old but non-correct Fender-style strap buttons replace the originals, which weren't very good. Fender-style domed knobs have been fitted. All other parts are original.
The body has been professionally refinished some time ago, and is in excellent condition. The transparent perspex pickguard is in excellent shape. The neck and fingerboard are original. The frets have been recently reprofiled and repolished and are in excellent condition. The neck is straight and the guitar plays well with a low action.
