What we bought in the 1960s if we couldn't afford a Fender Strat. This was Hofner's attempt to outdo the Jaguar and Jazzmaster. The finish was stripped about 20 years ago. It's had a complete refinish, and I rebound the neck, profiled and repolished the frets, and fixed several problems with the wiring - probably the hardest bit of the job was working out the electrics! Virtually all the metalwork survived (though I had to make a relic'd trem cavity cover), but a lot of repolishing was needed.
Strictly speaking this isn't a Galaxie - the model distributed by Selmer in the UK and Commonwealth countries - but a 176 Solid - Hofner's European and later US version. The Galaxie does not have the 5-way tone selector. In the pics of two Hofners, a Galaxie is on the left, and the Model 176 Solid is on the right.
Thanks to Steve Russell explaining the difference between a Galaxie and a 176 Solid. Steve's Vintage Hofner Site is a must!
