We've had a lot of fun customising guitars over the years. I always try to ensure that any mods will improve the playability and sonic qualities of the instrument, and not detract from its value - we've all seen some unfortunate alterations, and I've certainly fixed more than a few. When did you last see an original spec 70s Gibson SG? Seems they were all fitted with replacement pickups and extra switches ...
I particularly like the Seymour Duncan range of pickups and have lost count of how many I've fitted - the vintage replacements are great, ands Seymour's new Authentic range is really good, if distinctly pricey. A set of Seymours will make a huge difference to most far Eastern guitars - and you can always replace the original set before selling the guitar on.
EMG active pickups are also very good, especially for basses and 7-strings. Here's some pics of a set being fitted to an Ibanez Universe, along with a mirror pickguard.
