Antique Parlour Guitar

This antique parlour guitar dates from the late nineteenth century, or just possibly the very beginning of the twentieth. Though well-made, there is no indication of the maker. The style, particularly the ebonised neck and round heel, suggests a northern European origin, but it may possibly have been made by one of the many North American firms which employed European emigrants - the body shape is more 'transatlantic' compared to the more 'figure-of-eight' shapes of French guitars, for example.

Spruce top, highly figured Brazilian rosewood back and sides. As was often the case, the back and sides were laminated on to spruce for extra stability. The ebonised neck is narrower than a modern classical guitar, with a flat fingerboard. The frets are true and in good order.

The engraved brass tuners are in very good condition and work well. Unusually, they are recessed into the sides of the peghead rather than sitting on top of the wood, which again is a hallmark of a well-made instrument. The guitar is generally in very good condition for its age. However, there are old repaired and cleated cracks to the top and sides.

Fitted with normal tension classical strings.
