Tortoloid is a handsome new pickguard material developed by luthier Mario Proulx, using poured resins and dyes to reproduce the look of actual tortoise shell. Available in a range of classic styles, it has semi-transparent areas that intensify the colour of the soundboard to complement your guitar's appearance. Tortoloid will add a vintage touch to your guitar.
Each Tortoloid pickguard or sheet is individually made. Like natural shell, no two have exactly the same pattern. The highly durable material is .025" thin, flexible, and resists shrinkage. It's a little thinner than the Greven Tor-Tis material, which can be an advantage on some guitars. The shape of the dreadnought version is authentic, too, and a good fit on most modern dreads. We also have a slightly over-size version, about 1/8" larger all round, which is very handy if you need to avoid the 'tan line' that can show when old pickguards are removed.
There is an 'antique tortoise' design - actually a replia of hawksbill turtle shell, which is what antique tortoiseshell actually was; a 40s-style red swirl; and amber and red firestripe or tigerstripe patterns.
The pre-shaped guards come with 3M self-adhesive sheet attached ready for installation. The adhesive film needs to be purchased separately for the sheet stock. Heat the sheet stock gently before cutting - it will crack if cut when old.
